How to Build a Butt and Pass Log Cabin

On this page I am only going to give you an outline of how to build a butt and pass log cabin / home, there are hundreds of other articles on this website that will explain more in detail 🙂

Before we start please ask yourself this question.

Do I really know what I am letting myself in to? I am guessing not really, but I hope after you have read my website you might be more “aware”.

YES YOU CAN BUILD YOUR OWN LOG HOME

OK, I am going to tell you all the secrets and show you how you can build your very own butt and pass log cabin / home.

How to build a butt and pass log cabin / home

All you have to do is follow the steps I outline and read the information I give on the pages within this website. I have tried to cover in detail the methods for building a log home. I have included some nice pictures to help show you what is going on, but as each and every log cabin is unique you need to use your imagination a little 😉

So let’s get started building a butt and pass log cabin, the simple steps

  • Buy some land (or do the second step first then come back to this one).
  • Design your log home and get plans and approval (this stage involves lots of different things but really isn’t that complicated).
  • Get some logs, either from your land or buy them.
  • Clear the ground where you will build.
  • Put down your foundations.
  • Build your log walls.
  • Build your roof.
  • Put in your floors, stairs and internal walls and cut out your windows and doors.
  • Chink your walls.

Now the difficult stuff:

Install the following:

Heating, electrical, septic, plumbing, windows, doors, flooring and all the other finishing touches.

At certain times you will be inspected to see if you have done everything correctly (again no problem if you just take your time and do it right first time).

Now you have your very own log cabin, not too difficult was it?

If you have lots of time and the determination to fight on no matter what problems you may face, then being a self builder is the way to go. If however the thought of spending every weekend for the next 1 to 3 years (yes, that is how long the average person takes to complete a log home project part time) is not your cup of tea, then handing over the project to a log home builder might be the way to go, like me 🙂

I hope you enjoyed my guide to how to build a butt and pass log cabin. There is lots more information around the site so please feel free to look around. Below I expand a little more to give you a little more detail if you are still interested at this point 🙂

How to build your very own butt and pass log home in more detail

Buy some land (or do the second step first then come back to this one).

Choose a place that you would like your log home to be. Of course there are 100’s of factors that will influence your decision, but really you can build a log cabin anywhere. Before you buy land, check out the neighbors and see if similar homes have been built in the area to get an idea of building suitability and get a soil test done to determine foundation type and septic requirements.

Design your log home and get plans and approval (this stage involves lots of different things but really isn’t that complicated).

Get out your notebook and pen and start drawing. But my advice is keep it square, it’s easier to build and stronger. Take that doodle to an architect and get your house plans drawn up. Take these to your local authority and get everything approved to build.

Get some logs, either from your land or buy them.

If you have logs on site, great, cut them down and use them. If not then you need to buy some logs. This can be expensive but I know tricks to get them really cheap and sometimes even for FREE.

Clear the ground where you will build.

Get out the rake and start raking… clear the land yourself if it’s not too bad or get someone to do it for you. As long as the land is “flattish” you are good to go.

Put down your foundations.

Here you will need to dig holes, or lay down concrete slabs, rough in septic and other utilities depending on your sites requirements. This is a very important stage and worth taking your time over as mistakes here will come back and bite you later, you have been warned!

Build your log walls.

The most fun you can have with a drill, a hammer and loads of rebar. Building the walls of your log cabin is really a joyful experience, here you get to see your log home grow out of the ground skyward and it is all done by hand.

Build your roof.

Buy one or build your own? This will probably be the most expensive element of the building process and some think the most difficult and potentially most dangerous. I build my own but if you decide to buy then it will arrive on the back of a truck and you just throw it up there and now you are “under roof” congratulations.

Put in your floors, stairs and internal walls and cut out your windows and doors.

You have designed your dream log home, now you can start to see the inside take shape. As the log walls bear all the weight, the internal walls can literally go anywhere and there will be loads of space for that walk in wardrobe and games room.

It’s a little drafty in your log cabin so now would be a good time to chink the walls. Take your time and do this with care and attention to detail and you will have gorgeous looking walls.

Now the difficult stuff:

Install the following:

Heating, electrical, septic, plumbing, windows, doors, flooring and all the other finishing touches.

If you are not qualified in any of the above then you will have to get professionals in to do it for you, because of the following:

At certain times you will be inspected to see if you have done everything correctly (again no problem if you just take your time and do it right first time).

You can easily find qualified people to do the work for you if you know where to look and who to ask.

That’s how to build a butt and pass log cabin / home. Of course each and every step requires skills, thought and dedication, but all the above can be achieved if you just don’t give up.
